Personal protection
Personal protective equipment (PPE) helps you work safely with epoxy, polyester, polyurethane, silicones, coatings and other chemical products. The protection you need depends on the product and the work you are carrying out. This may include protection against skin and eye contact, vapours released during application and dust generated while sanding or grinding.

Why is personal protective equipment important?
When working with chemical products, you may be exposed to liquids, splashes, vapours or dust. The risks vary depending on the material and application. Mixing and applying a synthetic resin, for example, requires different protection from sanding a fully cured material.
Suitable personal protective equipment helps reduce exposure while you work. Examples include chemical-resistant gloves to prevent skin contact, safety glasses to protect against splashes and a suitable respirator when respiratory protection is required.
Always check the product information and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) of the product you are working with. These documents specify the safety measures and personal protective equipment recommended for that particular product.
What personal protective equipment do you need?
The PPE you need depends on the material, the application method and the working conditions. Below you will find the main types of personal protection.
Gloves for protection against chemicals
Gloves help prevent direct skin contact with resins, hardeners, coatings and other chemical products. Use gloves that are suitable for the substance you are working with. The required chemical resistance can vary between materials.
Nitrile gloves are used with most synthetic resins and coating systems. These include epoxy resin, polyester resin, polyurethane resin and various coatings and paints. Always check whether the chosen glove material provides sufficient protection for the specific product you are using.
Safety glasses for splashes and dust
Safety glasses protect your eyes while mixing, applying, sanding and grinding. Protection against splashes is particularly important when working with liquid resins and hardeners.
The Colad safety glasses are lightweight and adjustable, allowing you to adjust the fit to your face.
Respirator for chemical vapours
Respiratory protection may be required for work in which harmful vapours or gases can be released. The type of mask and filter must be suitable for the substances you are working with. A dust mask, for example, does not automatically protect against organic vapours.
Our range includes the 3M 6000 half face respirator and the 3M 4251 half face respirator.

Dust mask for sanding and grinding
Fine dust particles can be released during sanding, sawing or grinding. Use suitable respiratory protection against fine dust.
Polyestershoppen offers a range of products including P2 dust masks. A P2 dust mask with exhalation valve is also available. The exhalation valve helps remove warm and humid exhaled air.
Please note: a dust mask is designed to protect against particles. Chemical vapours may require a different type of respiratory protection and filter.
Protective clothing
A coverall or other suitable protective clothing helps prevent liquids and dust from coming into direct contact with your skin or clothing. Choose protective clothing based on the work you are carrying out and the substances you are using.
For work that generates a lot of dust, a hooded coverall can also be practical.
What protection should you use with epoxy, polyester and polyurethane?
There is no universal set of personal protective equipment that is suitable for every chemical product and every situation. The required protection depends on factors including the composition of the product, the application method, the quantity used, ventilation and the risk of splashes or dust formation.
Use the examples below as a general guideline:

Working safely with epoxy, polyester and other synthetic resins
Personal protective equipment is only one part of working safely. When mixing, applying and finishing products, you should also pay attention to your workplace and working method.
- Ensure adequate ventilation. Prevent vapours from building up and follow the ventilation instructions for the product being used.
- Read the product and safety information before use. Check the label, instructions, Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS), where available.
- Avoid skin contact. Wear suitable gloves and protective clothing and work as cleanly as possible.
- Protect your eyes. Wear suitable eye protection whenever there is a risk of splashes, flying particles or dust.
- Use the correct mask and filter. Protection against fine dust is not the same as protection against chemical vapours. Match your respiratory protection to the work being carried out and the product being used.
- Keep your workplace clean. Clean up spilled materials according to the product instructions and avoid unnecessary exposure.
- Store products according to the instructions. Keep chemical products properly closed and store them in accordance with the information on the label and in the product documentation.
Choosing personal protective equipment
Choose the right personal protective equipment based on both the product and the work you are going to carry out. When mixing liquid epoxy, for example, the main priority is preventing skin and eye contact. When sanding cured resin, protection against fine dust becomes particularly important.
Always review the safety information for the product first and then choose the appropriate gloves, eye protection, respiratory protection and protective clothing.
