Reducing heat loss with Froth-Pak PU foam

In a world of energy efficiency and sustainability, minimizing heat loss is a hot topic. Whether you are a homeowner looking to reduce your energy bills, a contractor looking for sustainable building solutions or simply someone concerned with environmental conservation, one thing is certain: reducing heat loss is a crucial step towards a comfortable and energy-efficient living environment. In this informational article we take a closer look at one of the most effective methods to reduce heat loss: the use of Froth-Pak sprayable polyurethane foam (PU foam). We explain step by step how to reduce heat loss using Froth-Pak insulation foam.

The difference between Froth-Pak and traditional insulation materials

Complete airtightness cannot be created with many traditional insulation materials, such as glass wool. Seams and cracks at the connections create cold bridges. This is hermetically sealed with Froth-Pak insulation foam, guaranteeing airtightness. Moreover, Froth-Pak has the best lambda value and the product is easy to use.

Benefits of Froth-Pak:

  • Very high insulation value (lambda value 0.021).
  • Fine-celled moisture-proof system.
  • Fast curing in approx. 10 minutes.
  • Easy application.

Applying Froth-Pak step by step to limit heat loss [manual]

We would like to walk you through the steps of limiting heat loss with Froth-Pak foam insulation. In the video below we apply Froth-Pak PU foam to the ceiling of a house. We will take you through the entire process and show you all the steps in detail. We also take measurements before and after to assess the effect. Please watch the video or read all the steps on this page.

Requirements

For this job you will need the following products:

Step 1. Heat the Froth-Pak

Before we start insulating the room, it is important that Froth-Pak has the right temperature. During processing, the temperature of the product must be between 20°C and 30°C. An optimal temperature gives maximum foam efficiency and faster curing. Use the special Froth-Pak heating jacket to heat the set. This heats the contents to the correct temperature, allowing you to spray the foam insulation without any problems.

Step 2. Remove old insulation material & prepare the surface

Now that the Froth-Pak is heating up, you can remove the old insulation. After removing the old insulation, it is important that you prepare the ceiling properly. Make sure that the areas where the foam insulation will be placed are dry and free of grease. It is not possible to spray foam insulation on a damp surface or a surface with condensation or grease residue. In addition, tape off everything where you do not want foam insulation and move any cables to the side.

Step 3. Put on personal protective equipment

After curing, Froth-Pak is completely safe. It is important to protect yourself well during processing. Therefore, wear the correct personal protective equipment while working:

  • Disposable overalls.
  • Latex gloves.
  • Half face mask including filters.
Tip: with the PU safety kit you have the right protective equipment at your fingertips so you can get started safely with your insulation project.

Step 4. Prepare the Froth-Pak kit for use

When the Froth-Pak has reached the correct temperature, prepare the set for use. Make sure you are using the Froth-Pak hose set and follow the steps below:

  • Connect both hoses to the correct cylinder using the colour indicated (red to red and blue to blue).
  • Tighten the nut on the hose set with the wrench provided.
  • Fully open the cylinders.
  • Spray the application gun with Vaseline.
  • Spray into a plastic bag for 3 seconds.
  • Clean the gun with PU cleaner.
  • Firmly click the nozzle into the application gun.

Step 5. Insulate the ceiling with Froth-Pak

Now that all preparations have been made, you can start processing the sprayable foam insulation.

  • Adhesive layer: first apply a thin adhesive layer with a quick sweeping motion. This layer ensures that the next (thick) layer adheres better. If you can touch the already sprayed layer without it sticking, you can spray the next layer.

  • Thick insulation layer: attach a new nozzle and spray with a slow sweeping motion to get a thick layer of about 1.5 cm. Then let the foam harden properly.

Please note: the curing time of Froth-Pak depends on the ambient temperature. The higher the temperature, the faster the foam hardens.

Step 6. Remove the tape and excess insulating foam

When the insulating foam has hardened, you can remove the tape and excess insulating foam (for the latter you can use a saw or utility knife). You can then reassemble the ceiling. The ceiling is now successfully insulated.

In the instructional video we show in the before and after measurements that we have reduces the heat loss from a difference of 3°C to a difference of 1°C. Good luck with your project!
