Carbon fabric, also known as carbon, is a woven reinforcing material made of carbon fibres. The material is very versatile and, due to its high strength, is often used to reinforce products. Carbon fibre is therefore widely used in shipbuilding, model making and the manufacture of various automotive parts.
Carbon fabric also has a decorative function. For example, carbon is used to laminate an existing part. Think of the interior and exterior of cars, boats and scooter covers.
In most cases, carbon fabric is used in combination with epoxy resin. However, carbon fabric can also be combined with polyester and vinylester resin.
Carbon fabric is known for its high tensile strength, stiffness and lightness. This makes it a suitable reinforcement material for lightweight parts that need to have a high degree of rigidity. This means that you can use carbon fibre without any worries for projects that are subject to high mechanical loads. The following rule applies to carbon fabric: the denser and more complex the material, the stronger the final product. Carbon is very heat resistant, so the fabric will not warp, soften or melt under heat.
Finally, carbon fabric is a semiconductor. This has consequences when you use carbon with a metal, as electrolysis can occur. Here, electrolysis can occur. Using a glass layer between the carbon and the metal can solve this problem.
Carbon is not very resistant to point loads. To increase the point load, you can make a combination of glass fabric and aramid fabric.

Aramid fabric is a strong fibre with high impact resistance. Aramid is also called kevlar (Dupont) or twaron (Akzo). This material is often used as a reinforcing fibre for applications where high impact strength, tensile strength and point loads are required. For example, aramid is used as a reinforcement material in shipbuilding and aircraft construction.
Aramid fabric is known for its high impact resistance and stiffness. However, this stiffness is lower than that of carbon (carbon). On the other hand, aramid fabric has a better point load. For this reason, aramid fabric is often used in bulletproof vests.
Aramid fabric does not absorb resin by itself. Because of this property, it can also delaminate easily. This is an advantage for point loads as it can withstand more. However, it is not advantageous for stiffness. This is also the reason why Kevlar fall arrest helmets can only be used once.
Aramid fabric is also non-conductive, wear-resistant and has no melting point.
To process carbon cloth and Kevlar optimally, you need pressure or vacuum. If the ratio of resin to fibre exceeds 30:70 (30 parts by weight of resin to 70 parts by weight of fabric), the resin takes on a large part of the strength while being less strong than the fibre. Since carbon and aramid fabrics are quite expensive, it is a shame not to use vacuum to get the best properties out of them. Both carbon and aramid can be processed with epoxy, polyester and vinylester resin.
