How to remove scratches from glass

Removing scratches from glass involves two steps: sanding and polishing.

By sanding the glass, the surface is levelled until the scratch disappears. Afterwards, the glass is polished back to clarity using a specialised polishing compound such as Mirka Polarshine E3 (included in this set).

Important:

  • Always start with the finest possible grit.
  • Only switch to a coarser grit if necessary.
  • Progress back to at least P1000.
  • Only from P1000 onwards can the glass be polished back to full clarity.

The coarser the sanding, the higher the risk of slight distortion in the glass. Therefore, work carefully and in stages.

Step-by-step guide to polishing glass

  1. Clean the glass thoroughly.

Use a strong glass cleaner. Always work on a clean surface to prevent additional scratches.

  2. Determine the depth of the scratch.

Assess how deep the scratch is. Light scratches can often be removed directly with polishing compound. Apply a small amount of Mirka Polarshine E3 to a felt polishing pad and polish the scratch for approximately 5 minutes at a low speed. If the scratch does not disappear, proceed with sanding.

  3. Sanding deeper scratches.
    - Sand the glass using Abranet SIC.
    - Start with a fine grit (e.g. P400).
    - Only switch to a coarser grit if necessary.
    - Sand each step for approximately 5 minutes.

  4. Refining to a fine grit.

Use Mirka Abralon discs to work back up to at least P1000 for a smooth surface.

  5. Polishing.

Use a felt pad with Polarshine E3 polishing compound and polish for approximately 10 minutes until the glass is clear again.

  6. Inspect the result.

Repeat if necessary to achieve a perfect result.
