Injecting a Caravan Floor with Permacol 5663

Do you have a soft or springy floor in your caravan? Then injecting the caravan floor with Permacol 5663 is the ideal solution. In this article, we explain step by step how to approach this job, what advantages this method offers and why Permacol 5663 is the best choice for the task.

Why inject a caravan floor?

After many years of use, a caravan floor can lose its strength. This is often caused by the foam layer between the upper and lower floor panels detaching or collapsing. A soft floor is not only unpleasant to walk on, but can also become dangerous over time.

Fortunately, you don’t need to replace the entire floor — there is a simple solution. With the right injection adhesive, you can reinforce the floor without major renovation work. A widely used and proven method is injecting the floor with Permacol 5663, a powerful moisture-curing polyurethane adhesive.

What is Permacol 5663?

Permacol 5663 is a solvent-free, single-component PU adhesive that cures through moisture in the air or substrate. It is specially designed for injecting soft caravan floors and offers many advantages:

  • Strong adhesion to both upper and lower layers.
  • Fast curing.
  • Shock-resistant and flexible.
  • Waterproof (EN 204-D4 certified).
  • Excellent insulating properties.
  • Suitable for wood, GRP, polystyrene, aluminium, steel and more.

Step-by-step guide: injecting a caravan floor with Permacol 5663

Requirements

Step 1. Preparation

If possible, place the caravan on a lift or raise it enough to reach the underside comfortably. Mark out a grid of approximately 10 × 10 cm on the underside of the floor. Drill a 6 or 8 mm hole in each square, just through the lower panel and as close as possible to the upper layer of the floor.

Step 2. Injecting

Inject the adhesive into each hole using a hand-operated cartridge gun. A hand gun is recommended because you can feel the back pressure — this indicates that the void between the floor layers has been filled. Work systematically from left to right and from top to bottom. Inject until you feel slight resistance.

Allow any excess adhesive to drain if necessary. This prevents the floor from bulging due to overpressure.

Step 3. Curing

Do not seal the drill holes immediately, as the adhesive needs space to expand. Ideally, allow the floor to cure overnight.

Step 4. Finishing

After 24 to 36 hours, the adhesive is fully cured. Trim away any excess and seal the holes with Tectyl or wood stain. The caravan floor is now ready for use again!
