Alginate rubber is an easy-to-process alginate moulding powder. Due to a new natural biodegradable fibre, this alginate is more tear resistant than the quality currently available on the market. Alginate powder is skin friendly and therefore excellent for moulding body parts. In addition, the alginate rubber is extremely suitable for medical applications. For your application you can easily buy the alginate powder online in the desired packaging unit. Below, we explain how to use this product!

Application

Alginate is suitable for making, among other things, face prints or other body parts such as hands and feet. When the mould is ready, it can only be poured with water-curing products, such as porcelain plaster. Acrylic Prima is also an excellent product for casting the mould. For an adult hand you will need about 1 kg of mixture in total. This can be easily prepared in a mixing cup and mixed with a spiral mixer. A mould made of alginate is suitable for moisture-resistant resin systems such as plaster or Acrystal but NOT for epoxy. Use skin-friendly silicone rubber for epoxy bodycasting.

Note: the mixing ratio of Acrystal is 2.5 parts powder and 1 part liquid and not 5 parts powder and 1 part water, as stated in the video.

Processing

Alginate can be processed at room temperature. Measure and weigh the correct amounts of water and alginate powder. The mixing ratio is 1 part powder to 3 parts water by weight. The table below shows an example.

Note: sprinkle the powder into the water, do not do it the other way round!

Water Alginate powder Total
750 grams 250 grams 1000 grams
1200 grams 400 grams 1600 grams
2000 grams 660 grams 2660 grams

After measuring and weighing, stir the alginate powder and the water with a small mixer at a low speed of no more than 200-300 rpm. Manual mixing is also possible, but we recommend this only for small quantities as mechanical mixing gives a better result. Then apply the mixture to the skin or model in a flowing motion. This way you avoid air bubbles on the surface.

The processing time is 4-5 minutes at a temperature of 20°C. The binding time is approximately 8-10 minutes. These times are strongly influenced by the temperature. Cold water slows down the process and warm water speeds it up. The fluidity of alginate can be adjusted by changing the ratio of powder and water. More water gives a thinner alginate with a longer processing time and demolding time. Less water ensures the opposite.

Processing time: 4-5 minutes at 20°C
Mixing ratio: 1 part by weight of powder to 3 parts by weight of water
Binding time: approx. 8-10 minutes
