Step 1: Make sure you have a good substrate

To create a nice base for applying an epoxy floor over underlayment in the bathroom, you first need to make some preparations. Fortunately, the type of underlayment does not matter because the epoxy treatment makes the bathroom floor completely seamless and waterproof.

It is best to make the slope directly with underlayment. That way you need less epoxy.

Step 2: Apply primer and covering with glass fibre

The second step for an epoxy floor in the bathroom is applying primer and covering with glass fibre. You'll need the following materials for this:

Tools and supplies:

We are going to cover the bathroom floor with twill fabric and epoxy to create a completely waterproof surface. Do you have underfloor heating? Then this can simply be applied over it.

We then start by rolling in the bathroom floor with the prepared epoxy. We "wet" the floor. Do this in strips so that you also have dry parts you can walk on. After the underlayment is wet, lay the twill fabric over it. Wet this fabric thoroughly with epoxy. Use the roller for this. With glass fabric tape you can laminate a raised edge if necessary to really make a "drip tray".

It is important to vent the laminate with the disc roller while laminating. You can keep this clean in a bucket of acetone.

When you have finished laminating, allow the entire floor to harden for 24 hours.

Step 3: Apply leveling epoxy

After hardening, you then level the bathroom floor with epoxy. Needed materials are:

Tools and supplies:

To ensure that the floor is seamless and will have the look of an epoxy floor, it is important to level it. This can be done easily with leveling epoxy. You will have excellent adhesion with the epoxy if you do this within 48 hours of applying the twill fabric with epoxy.

The amount of leveling epoxy required is difficult to estimate so order enough. You can return unused containers free of charge. Count on about 1kg per square metre.

Make 20 kg or 40 kg of epoxy leveling compound in one go. First mix the epoxy in the mortar tub. You do this by pouring both the resin and hardener completely into the tub. Then mix both components well with a spiral mixer. While doing so, scrape well along the edges and bottom. Then add all the powder. We recommend doing this in pairs. Mix the powder for at least 3 minutes with the spiral mixer until it is a nice homogeneous mass.

Now that your leveling epoxy is ready for use, you can pour it over the bathroom floor. Spread the leveling epoxy with a floor wiper if necessary. Then use the trowel to spread the epoxy evenly over the floor. If necessary, make new leveling compound in between and continue working.

Note: when processing epoxy leveling compound, it is important not to leave it in the mortar tub for too long. For optimal processing time, pour the epoxy quickly over the floor.

Again, let the leveling epoxy cure for at least 24 hours.

Step 4: Apply epoxy floor coating

The moment the leveling is complete, you move on to applying the coating. The following products will help you do this:

Tools and supplies:

Now it's time to finish the bathroom underlayment with the epoxy floor coating. Within 48 hours of applying the leveling, there is no need to sand and you can apply the floor coating immediately. After 48 hours, the floor should be sanded with 80-grit paper for optimal adhesion.

Count on around 700 to 800 grams of epoxy floor coating per square metre. Because our system is solvent-free, nothing evaporates so you have a good layer thickness right away. For this reason, applying one layer is sufficient.

Pour the hardener into the tin of floor coating base and add the pigment. Scrape out the pigment with a mixing spatula.

Then mix everything well with a spiral mixer on a cordless drill. Do this on a low speed and scrape well along the bottom and edges. Mix for at least 2 to 3 minutes until it is a homogeneous mass.

Note: do not leave epoxy floor coating for bathroom underlayment in the can for too long after mixing. This will shorten the processing time considerably. Pouring out floor coating takes longer to process.

Immediately after mixing, pour the floor coating over the floor along the edges. Spread the floor coating with a coat roller. Finish the edges with a 50 mm disposable brush.

Tip: do you want to keep the edges of the bathroom floor neat and protected? Then tape the walls with 50 mm masking tape before applying the floor coating.

Roll the floor coating crosswise. Make new floor coating in between if necessary.

Step 5: Anti-slip with rubber granules

You can give the bathroom floor a nice anti-slip profile right after the floor coating has been applied. Especially in the shower area of a bathroom, this is recommended.

The Soft Sand rubber anti-slip granules are very easy to apply. Because the sand is rubbery, this makes it nice to walk on. It does not feel rough to the touch. It gives a very good anti-slip combined with comfort. To apply the anti-slip, use following materials:

Tools and supplies:

For a nice non-slip floor, it is advisable to sprinkle the granules. This can be done very easily with our spreading packs. Sprinkle the granules liberally over the floor while it is still wet. Work from back to front and wear studded soles.

Now let the floor coating harden for at least 48 to 72 hours. Then you can vacuum away the loose granules, leaving a nice profile.

Step 6: Silk gloss coating

Another option is to finish the floor with a silk gloss PU coating for epoxy floors. Of course, you can also combine this finish by, for example, fitting the shower cubicle with rubber anti-slip granules and finishing the bathroom floor with a silk gloss coating.

A PU silk gloss coating gives a nice silky finish and this coating has slight anti-slip properties. The coating also gives better protection against scratches. For PU coating, use the products below.

Tools and supplies:

First sand the bathroom floor with 180 or 240-grit paper. This can be done with a rotary sander. Then clean the bathroom floor thoroughly and make sure all the dust is gone. Do not proceed until the bathroom floor is completely dry again.

It is then time to start mixing the PU coating. Pour the base into a clean empty bucket and then pour in all the hardener. Mix both components with a spiral mixer at low speed for a long time. Scrape well along the bottom and edges. Mix for at least 3 minutes.

Then pour a small amount through the paint strainer into the large paint tray. The paint strainer ensures that no flakes end up in the coating you are about to apply.

Now roll thin layers of coating over the floor. Make sure you work systematically because you can't always see exactly where you left off. Roll over crosswise.

After about 4 to 6 hours you will already see the beautiful silk-gloss effect, but it is advisable not to carefully walk on the floor on socks, for example, until after 24 hours.

Important: both epoxy floor coating and silk gloss coating need to cure for about 7 days until they are fully loadable and resistant to water or moisture. Both systems seem dry after just one day but cure further in the next 7 days.
