How to Waterproof a Swimming Pool | DIY Pool Construction

Dreaming of your own swimming pool in the garden? Or do you want to renovate an existing pool? Then a reliable waterproof finish is essential. At Polyestershoppen, you can choose between two proven methods to create a durable, watertight pool:

  • Lining with polyester resin and fibreglass.
  • Coating with a polyurethane membrane (Impermax).

In this article, we compare both options and help you decide which method best suits your project.

Method 1: Lining the pool with polyester resin

Finishing a swimming pool with polyester resin is a widely used technique. A strong fibreglass structure is applied, finished with polyester gelcoat and a special pool topcoat. Once cured, this system is fully waterproof and resistant to chlorine.

Advantages

  • Extremely strong and wear-resistant structure.
  • Resistant to chlorinated water.
  • Available in any colour.
  • Available from stock for fast delivery.

Disadvantages

  • Some basic laminating knowledge recommended.
  • Project takes multiple days
  • Good ventilation and protective equipment required during application.

Method 2: Waterproofing the pool with a polyurethane membrane (Impermax ST)

Impermax ST is a modern, liquid polyurethane coating. It is easy to apply with a roller in multiple layers. This seamless waterproofing is elastic, chemically resistant, and ideal for use in pools with chlorinated water. You can easily finish Impermax ST with PaintChlore pool coating.

Advantages

  • Easier to apply than polyester.
  • Seamless, flexible waterproofing.
  • Suitable for complex shapes.

Disadvantages

  • Only available in standard colours (white and blue).
  • Not always available from stock.
  • 2K PaintChlore only supplied in 25 kg packaging.
