Personal protective equipment

We regularly receive questions about personal protection when handling epoxy and polyester. For example, do you have to wear a fume mask while working with epoxy? And is epoxy harmful to your health? Many synthetic resins, without proper protective equipment, can be harmful to your health. It is therefore important that you use the right protective equipment. In this article, we explain to you all about the personal protective equipment (PPE) we recommend using while working with our products!

Handling polyester resin

When handling polyester resins from Polyestershoppen, the usual precautions for handling chemicals should be observed. These include the following:

  • Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
  • Do not eat, drink or smoke during use.
  • Keep protective clothing separately.
  • Remove contaminated clothing immediately.
  • Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.
  • Work in a well ventilated area.

Respiratory protection: always use a vapour mask while handling polyester. For example, you can use the 3M 4251 half-face mask with accompanying filters for protection against fumes. If long-term protection is required, a mask with separate filters is recommended so that these can be replaced in a timely manner.

Hand protection: always wear safety gloves when handling polyester. The material of the gloves should be impermeable and resistant to the product/substance/preparation method. The tightness of the glove must be checked before each new application.

Eye and body protection: wear close-fitting safety glasses and suitable work clothing (such as disposable protective overalls) when handling polyester resin.

Personal protective equipment:

Tip: we have put together a complete "Polyester safety package" for the safe processing of polyester.

Handling silicone rubber

When handling Polyestershoppen's silicone moulding rubber, the usual precautions for handling chemicals should be observed. These include the following:

  • Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
  • Do not eat, drink or smoke during use.
  • Keep protective clothing separately.
  • Remove contaminated clothing immediately.
  • Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.

Respiratory protection: you can use this silicone without respiratory protection, provided you work in an area you can adequately ventilate.

Hand protection: always wear (nitrile) gloves when handling silicone rubber.

Eye protection: while handling silicone, wear close-fitting safety glasses to prevent eye contact.

Personal protective equipment:

Tip: read silicone safety sheets for comprehensive safety information.

Handling polyurethane casting resin

Ventilation: no special requirements for ventilation. Good general ventilation should be sufficient to control exposure to air contaminants in the workplace.

Respiratory protection: if ventilation is inadequate, use a suitable respiratory protection mask. A mask with an A-P2 filter (inorganic vapours, particles) is recommended.

Hand protection: protect your hands well with latex, neoprene or nitrile gloves when handling polyurethane casting resin. Always check the tightness of the gloves before use.

Eye protection: wear safety glasses to avoid exposing the eyes to splashes, mist, gases or dust when handling PU casting resin.

Personal protective equipment:

Tip: read the PU casting resin safety sheets for comprehensive safety information.

Handling DD paint

When handling Double Coat DD paint, the usual precautions for handling chemicals should be observed. These include the following:

  • Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
  • Do not eat, drink or smoke during use.
  • Keep protective clothing separately.
  • Remove contaminated clothing immediately.
  • Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.

Respiratory protection: a half-face mask for organics and solvents according to EN140 type A1 or A2 is recommended when handling DD paint.

Hand protection: always wear safety gloves when handling DD paint. The material of the gloves must be impermeable and resistant to the product/substance/preparation method. Always check the tightness of the gloves before use. The use of latex or nitrile gloves is the most appropriate choice for handling DD paint.

  • For prolonged contact: nitrile gloves.
  • As splash protection: nitrile gloves.
  • Not suitable: gloves made of leather or thick fabric.

Eye protection: we recommend using close-fitting safety glasses for handling DD paint.

Personal protective equipment:

Tip: read the DD paint safety sheets for comprehensive safety information.

Handling acetone

Respiratory protection: we recommend using a vapour mask when you are processing large quantities of acetone or when you are working in an area that is difficult to ventilate.  When you are processing small quantities of acetone, you can also choose not to wear a mask. In that case, make sure the room can be properly ventilated!

Hand protection: we recommend always using latex or neoprene gloves when processing acetone. Always check the tightness of the gloves before use.

Eye protection: use close-fitting safety glasses when handling acetone to prevent contact with the eyes.

Personal protective equipment:

  • Latex or neoprene gloves
  • Vapour mask or ensure good ventilation of the workplace
Tip: read the Acetone safety sheets for comprehensive safety information.

Safety when sanding and grinding

It is also important to work safely when sanding. Therefore, always wear gloves to protect your hands and wear a dust mask to protect yourself from the fine particles released during sanding.
