Polishing with Dulon | Polishing polyester gelcoat
Have you just done a gelcoat repair or has the gelcoat of your car, boat or caravan become dull? You can easily polish a polyester gelcoat to bring back that beautiful high gloss! In this article, we explain in 2 steps how to do this using Dulon rubbing compounds.
Step 1. Polishing with rubbing compound
Supplies:
Working method:
- Clean and degrease the surface. If necessary, clean it with Predulon 00 cleaner before polishing.
- Slightly damp the (hard) polishing pad with water. Then apply a small amount of Dulon Compound Strong 14 polish to the pad.
- Spread the polish thinly over the surface.
- Now polish the surface at a low speed.
- Increase the speed slightly during polishing until the desired result is achieved.
- Remove the residue from the surface with a microfibre cloth and continue with step 2.
Step 2. Protect with wax
Option 1: Dulon 1 & 2 - Polish & Wax set
Supplies:
Working method - manually
- Apply Dulon 1 with a damp microfibre cloth. Do this using circular motions until a light, white haze is formed.
- Then apply Dulon 2 in the same way as Dulon 1.
- Now let it dry and rub out with a clean, dry microfibre cloth.
Working method - machine
- Apply a small amount of Dulon 1 to a slightly moistened pad (medium) and spread it thinly over the surface.
- Polish the surface at a medium speed until a light, white haze has formed. Do not rub out this haze!
- Apply Dulon 2 in the same way.
- Let it dry to a powdery haze. You can now buff/rub the surface with a clean, dry lambswool pad at high rotation speed.
Option 2: Dulon 19 - Boatwax
Supplies:
Working method - manually
- Apply Dulon Premium Boatwax 19 with a damp microfibre cloth. Do this using circular motions until a light, white haze is formed.
- Now let the wax dry and buff off using a dry, clean, lint-free cloth.
Working method - machine
- Lightly moisten the polishing pad (soft) and apply a small amount of Dulon Premium Boatwax 19 on the pad.
- Spread Dulon Premium Boatwax 19 thinly on the surface.
- Polish the surface at low speed, in gentle, controlled movements, until a light, white haze is formed.
- Allow the wax to dry to a powdery haze.
- Buff/rub the surface with a lambswool pad at high rotation speed.
