Which primer do you need?

When working with products such as polyester, epoxy or polyurethane, a primer comes in handy. The surface you are working on must be roughened and cleaned before you can use a PU or epoxy primer. 

An epoxy primer or other type of primer often consists of a one or two component resin that provides a good bonding basis for the next layer. This next layer is often laminated or cast. The epoxy primer ensures that the next layer is 'fixed' to the surface and is stronger.

What is epoxy primer?

Epoxy primer serves as a basis for applying a coating to various materials. A primer ensures that the product used is not absorbed into the underlying material and improves adhesion. Epoxy primer is also known for its high adhesion to metal, iron, steel, aluminum, lacquer, filler and paint. We are happy to help you find the right primer.

G4 Adhesion primer / PU primer

G4 adhesion primer is a 1-component polyurethane (PU) based primer which is easy to handle.

G4 adhesion resin is particularly suitable for polyester coatings on substrates such as wood, stone, cement, masonry, metal and old polyester/epoxy substrates. This polyester primer is widely used for coating ponds, swimming pools, wooden hot tubs and boats, for example.

Processing is very simple: you pour the required amount into a mixing cup or bucket and then apply the primer to the surface to be bonded with a broad flat brush. You need about 125 grams per square metre. After about 1 to 2 hours, the primer has usually evaporated and you can start working with polyester resin and glass mat. It is important to apply the polyester resin within 12 hours after the primer has been applied.

De IJssel ZF epoxy primer

This special epoxy primer developed by De IJssel Coatings is particularly suitable as a base primer for steel substrates. One of the main advantages is that the primer has anti-corrosion properties and is therefore ideally suited for treating rusty surfaces. This epoxy primer also provides a perfect surface for 2K pu coatings.

  • Wood
  • Metal
  • Composite (epoxy or polyester)

When processing, ensure the surface is sanded and cleaned well. Remove as much rust as possible. Then follow the instructions in the extended technical data sheet. This document is also sent to you automatically when you order ZF epoxy primer.

Epoxy floor primer for dry substrates

This epoxy primer for dry substrates is mainly intended for porous concrete and cement substrates to promote the adhesion of an epoxy floor coating, epoxy cast floor or a PU (polyurethane) cast floor.

Its most important property is that this resin is quite thin, allowing it to easily penetrate porous substrates and subsequently minimise the absorbing effect of the substrate. In addition, this epoxy primer forms a good adhesion for a somewhat thicker resin such as a floor coating.

Suitable substrates:

  • Cement
  • Concrete
  • Wood

Before application, it is important that the surface is dry and clean. Vacuum the cement or concrete floor just before application. After this you can apply the epoxy primer.

Add the hardener to the resin in the bucket and mix well with a metal mixer. Do this for at least 3 minutes and then pour the mixture over the floor and spread with a wide coat roller. Do not leave the resin in the bucket for too long; due to the large mass it hardens faster. If you work with more people, it is advisable to order some extra empty buckets and divide the resin among the buckets after mixing.

Epoxy floor primer for damp substrates

Special primer that can be applied over damp cement and concrete floors to promote adhesion of epoxy floor coatings, epoxy cast floors or PU cast floors.

Since cement supplies require a long drying time, using this primer can be a significant time-saving solution. This primer is not suitable if the floor is so wet that there is water on the surface.

Suitable substrates:

  • Cement
  • Concrete
  • Wood

Treatment identical to a conventional epoxy primer. Add the hardener to the resin and mix well with a metal mixer. Spread the resin on the floor and roll out with a wide coat roller. If you are working with several people at the same time, it is advisable to order additional empty buckets and, after mixing the resin, divide them into the ordered buckets.

Epoxy primer for smooth substrates

This special epoxy primer is ideal for smooth surfaces where epoxy normally has great difficulty adhering. Think for example of ceramic surfaces, glass or very smooth concrete slabs. It is also suitable as a primer coat, for example, on tiled floors, after which it is possible to work with epoxy and glass fabric or a floor coating/cast floor.

Suitable substrates:

  • Glass
  • Ceramics
  • Smooth finished concrete
  • Tiles

Mix components A and B together by weight according to the description. Do not prepare too large quantities at once. Due to its low viscosity, the resin remains transparent after applying 2 coats. It is best to apply the epoxy with a velour roller.

Transparent epoxy primer 

This epoxy primer is actually not a real primer, but it is often used to "prime" a wooden table or top. By rolling a thin layer of epoxy coating, the substrate is "sealed", reducing the risk of air bubbles and other reactions with the substrate.  

Suitable substrates (as "primer"):

  • Wood

Mix both components together by weight according to the description. Consumption is approximately 250-300 grams per square metre. After mixing thoroughly and pouring into a new cup, it is best to apply the resin with a velour roller.
