Epoxy polishing | Tips & Tricks

We can imagine you could use some tips when you are just starting out with epoxy. After all, working with this material involves much more than simply mixing two liquids and pouring. What should you do if the result is dull? How much epoxy do you need? How should you polish correctly? What products do you need? We could go on and on. On this page we would like to give you some handy epoxy tips!

Dull epoxy

A common problem when working with epoxy is that the product comes out of the mould dull. This also gives a dull end result. There are several causes for this problem. For instance, the mould can become dull due to wear and tear (when you use the mould frequently) or the use of a release spray can cause the mould to become dull. This is because this spray leaves a layer in the mould. With this, we would certainly not discourage the use of a release spray, because this spray makes it easier for you to remove your work from your cast, thus extending the life of the cast.

Fortunately, epoxy is easy to polish to bring back the beautiful shine. In this article with handy epoxy tips, we explain how to restore this high gloss to your epoxy pieces. We also made a video about polishing epoxy. In it, Leen shows which products you need!

Tips for polishing epoxy

In the video above, Leen uses some useful products to get his epoxy shiny again. We recommend using a good polisher, Multitool or drill with a polishing wheel. You can also polish epoxy by hand but you won't achieve as good a result with that. In the video, we used the following products:

• Horizontal polisher (including protective cover)
• RESION High Gloss Polish
• RESION High Gloss Wax

To polish epoxy, follow these steps:

Step 1 - High Gloss Polish (polishing paste)

Apply a small amount of polishing paste (RESION High Gloss Polish) to the yellow disc. Turn on the polisher at a low speed and gently press the disc against the surface to be polished. When the polishing paste stops splashing, you can increase the speed. It is recommended to polish in old clothes. Make sure you polish the entire surface, from left to right and top to bottom.     

Step 2 - High Gloss Wax (polishing wax)

After you have treated the surface with the polishing paste, move on to the second step: waxing with RESION High Gloss Wax. By further treating the surface with this product, you fill in any remaining scratches and create an extra deep gloss. To do this, apply a small amount of polishing wax on the white disc of the horizontal polisher. For this step, too, start at a low speed and slowly increase it until you achieve the perfect shine.

General epoxy tips

As you probably already know, epoxy can be used as a glue, putty or laminating resin, to coat or for other creative applications. Universal epoxy is an all-round epoxy that works well in glass fabric and mixes well with fillers to make filler or glue. Do you want thicker layers for creative applications? Then use an epoxy resin. When you really get started with this product, we would like to give you our most useful epoxy tips:

• Determine the right mixig ratio. There are several handy tools for determining the mixing ratio of epoxy. You can read more about this in our blog on mixing epoxy.
• Think carefully beforehand about what kind of material you are going to use the epoxy on. Epoxy mixes well on wood, metal, aluminium, polyester, (most) plastics, stone and concrete. Epoxy adheres very poorly or not at all to polyethylene.
• Epoxy can be mixed with colour pigments. To colour the mixture completely opaque, you can use a special epoxy pigment paste. Prefer a surprising effect on your artwork? Then choose a Resi-Blast effect liquid. You can create amazing effects with this liquid!
