How well can epoxy withstand UV light?

We spend a lot of time testing our raw materials and continuing to develop quality. Recently, we have thoroughly tested our epoxy systems and other types of epoxy. In this test we focused on the epoxy yellowing process. We will of course be happy to share these results with you.

Test results of UV light on epoxy

We have tested different types of epoxy in our UV laboratory. This includes our own epoxy in different compositions to obtain the best result. We test this in a specially designed UV cabinet that mimics sunlight. This allows us to test accelerated yellowing due to UV exposure. However, we also perform the same test in actual outdoor light to be able to measure the yellowing period.

In the photo above you can see a recent test we performed. As you can see, there are widely varying results! Also included is the latest developed version of our new epoxy RESION UV epoxy resin and epoxy casting resin for large castings (the test results also apply to the RESION UV Resin Art epoxy resins in lowmedium and high viscosity).

We have tested all epoxy in 50 hours of ultraviolet light in a controlled environment. As a result, the epoxy is exposed to a high dose in a short period of time. Because we did two tests with actual outdoor light, this gives a very realistic picture of these different species and how they respond to sunlight.

We have labeled all the epoxy, so it is clear to you whether it is a Dutch or international brand. We have also clearly listed our own epoxy.

It is clear that epoxy yellows under the influence of sunlight or UV light. We can conclude that some epoxy materials are more or less sensitive to yellowing. We put extra emphasis on UV stability in our RESION UV Epoxy Resin, RESION UV Resin Art Epoxy and RESION Epoxy resin for large castings. The results speak for themselves.

What can you do to slow down the yellowing process from UV light?

There are several ways to slow the process of yellowing from UV light. Below are a number of things you can apply or take into account:

  • Choose a UV-stabilised epoxy system, or add UV-stabiliser to the epoxy.
  • Try to limit the amount of sunlight. For example, do not place the epoxy product in direct sunlight.
  • A window filters UV light and slows down yellowing, so yellowing of epoxy will be greatly slowed indoors.
  • Finish the product with a UV-filtering varnish, such as Double Coat DD Paint Transparent.
