High energy bills? Time to do something about it! Of course, there are many steps you can take to make your home more energy-friendly. In many old houses or old barns, the sloping roof is often poorly insulated. With sprayable PU foam, you can insulate your roof safely and quickly. In this guide, we explain step by step what you need to do.

What do you need to insulate your attic roof

Benefits of insulation with Froth-Pak

  • No more condensation.
  • Fine-celled moisture-proof system.
  • Very high insulation value (lambda value 0.021).
  • Easy to apply yourself.
  • Cured in 10 minutes.

How much Froth-Pak PU foam do you need?

It is best to calculate the number of litres. So suppose the total area of the roof is 10 square metres and you want to insulate 5 cm thick, you will need a total of 500 litres.

Follow the following 5 steps to insulate a roof with PU foam from Froth-Pak.

Step 1. Preheat the Froth-Pak set

For high foam efficiency and fast curing, it is very important that the Froth-Pak is properly preheated and stays at the right temperature during spraying. This is easy to do with a heating mat. For a 400L set, 1 heating mat is sufficient. For the large 1400L set, you will need 2 mats.

Step 2. Clean the surface

Make sure the surface you are going to spray on is clean, dry and free of grease.

Step 3. Prepare the Froth-Pak

We will now prepare the Froth-Pak set for use. Do this in a number of steps:

  1. Connect both hoses to the right cylinder using the colour indicated.
  2. Tighten the nut on the hose set using the spanner provided.
  3. Turn the cylinders fully open.
  4. Spray the gun with Vaseline.
  5. Spray for 3 seconds in a dirt bag.
  6. Clean the gun with PU cleaner.
Note: work safely with Froth-Pak and wear fully covering clothing, vapor mask, latex gloves and safety goggles. We have put together a special safety set for working with Froth-Pak.

Step 4. Apply a thin layer

First apply a thin adhesive layer with a blue nozzle. The blue nozzle is made so that the amount you apply is limited. This is ideal for a thin layer. We apply a thin layer first because a thick layer adheres better to existing PUR.

While spraying, make a smooth swinging motion from left to right.

Note: if you stop spraying for more than 30 seconds, you must replace the nozzle.

Step 5. Apply a 5 cm thick insulation layer

When the entire roof has a thin layer, you can apply a thicker layer. To do this, connect the white nozzle supplied with the hose set. Spray a layer about 5 cm thick. This can be done in several passes if necessary.

Tip: always check whether the PU foam foams out within 60 seconds. If not, the ratio is probably wrong. This is often because one of the nozzles is slightly blocked. Remove the nozzle and spray for a few seconds without the nozzle in a rubbish bag. With this, spray the pipes well. Then connect a new nozzle and you can spray again.
