In this article, we explain step by step how to apply IJmopox HB Coating. This epoxy coating is used to protect against osmosis (polyester) and corrosion (metal). The coating is available in three colours. It is important to choose the colour closest to your final coat.
De IJssel HB Coating is resistant to many chemicals and is often used as a primer before further finishing with DD Lacquer High Gloss or DD Lacquer Silk Gloss.
In the video below, product expert Arne shows you how to apply HB Coating to the hull of a boat. We have written down all the steps for you so you can easily read back the instructions.
Supplies
Before creating HB Coating, ensure optimum adhesion by sanding the surface well with 120-grit paper. Then degrease the surface with Double Coat Degreaser and remove dust with an adhesive cloth.
Please review the HB Coating technical data sheet carefully before starting.
Open the base component and stir it up. Weigh the desired amount and add the hardener in the mixing ratio 83:17 (by weight). Carefully weigh the components using a kitchen scale and mix well for optimum curing. Pour the mixture into a paint tray and always use a fume mask and latex gloves while working with HB Coating.
Apply IJmopox HB Coating easily with a velour roller. Roll out a new roller on a piece of cardboard first to get rid of as many loose particles from the roller as possible. Apply the coating liberally and spread it evenly over the surface to avoid sags. Immediately roll or smooth the surface without pressing hard.
For hard-to-reach areas, use a disposable brush.
Allow the first coat of HB Coating to cure for at least a day before continuing. After the IJmopox coating has cured, sand the entire surface and you may discover spots that are not finished nicely. Make these spots tight again with Variopox epoxy putty. The imperfections are easily visible because of the even colour of the HB Coating and putty.
After you have filled all the bumps, sand the surface again and, if necessary, you can apply a second coat of HB Coating with thinner. To do this, mix about 5-10% of IJmopox thinner with the epoxy coating and apply it like the first coat. Let this cure again and sand the surface one last time.
Now the surface is ready to be finished with Double Coat DD Varnish or antifouling.
