What is the best boat paint? Which boat paint is suitable for my boat? How do you apply a paint system? We regularly receive questions like these regarding topcoats for boats, yachts, and other substrates. And these are completely understandable questions. After all, a boat is exposed to harsh weather conditions that can severely affect the surface. Boat paint protects the surface and provides a beautiful color finish. In this article, you will find everything you need to know about the various boat paints in our range.
Boat paint (also referred to as yacht paint, marine paint, marine varnish, or boat lacquer) is a paint system specially formulated for use on boats and yachts. Boat paint is used as a decorative coating on the hull above the waterline and also serves a protective function. Yacht paint provides protection against UV sunlight and possesses wear-resistant, scratch-resistant, and impact-resistant properties. At Polyestershoppen, you will find both 1-component systems and 2-component systems.
Characteristics of boat paint
What is the difference between a one-component boat paint and a two-component paint, and when should you choose which system? The choice is largely determined by the substrate and the environmental conditions during painting.
One-component (1K) paint is easier to apply, tolerant of different substrates, and cures even at lower temperatures. This makes it a very user-friendly option.
Two-component (2K) paint is harder, more abrasion-resistant, and offers a longer lifespan, but places higher demands on the user and application conditions, such as temperature and humidity.
For the most beautiful and durable result, a two-component topcoat is always the best choice!

De IJssel Coatings is renowned for its high-grade two-component topcoat: Double Coat DD Paint. This popular coating was developed specifically for boats and consists of a polyurethane resin offering exceptional scratch resistance and weatherability. DD Paint is not intended for continuous immersion in fresh, salt, or brackish water. Therefore, use this system exclusively for applications above the waterline. Double Coat DD Paint is available in high gloss, semi-gloss, and matt. Polyestershoppen features a fully automated mixing system for DD Paint, allowing us to custom-tint and ship any color immediately.
Epifanes Yacht Coatings provides a wide selection of premium marine paints. Their Poly-urethane (2K) and Mono-urethane (1K) paints are ideal for above-waterline use and come in high gloss or satin finishes. We custom-mix these paints as well to ensure fast dispatch.
RESION Polyester Topcoat, sometimes called "polyester paint," is a thick coating extensively used to finish fiberglass laminates—for instance, when you have built a new polyester transom. You can finish the interior side with a topcoat. Topcoat is also used for repairing gelcoat cracks and deep scratches. For gelcoat restoration, we offer a complete repair kit including color-matched topcoat. We supply polyester topcoat rapidly in any desired RAL color.
Note: Finishing with topcoat leaves a slight surface texture. As a result, topcoat is not always the preferred aesthetic finish for boat hulls. Need a perfectly smooth surface? Sand the topcoat smooth and polish it. Topcoat can be applied below the waterline. For anti-fouling properties, apply an anti-fouling system over top.
